Who are the Tribals

Ko Te Rewarewa, Tauarau, Tāwhia, Ōtenuku, Waikirikiri, Te Tōtara, Te Pūtere, Te Papakāina, Ōwhakatoro, Ōhotu, Nāhina me Hui te Raniora nā marae kei Te Taraipara ō Rūātoki Tribal, e rua nā mānai mai ia hapū ka noho ki te taraipara nei. The “Te Taraipara ō Rūātoki Tribal” is a voluntary forum for hapu in the North and Northwest of Tūhoe, to discuss issues, exchange ideas and collaborate on raising the standards of well being and prosperity for whanāu, hapū and the Ruatoki valley.
Te Taraipara ō Rūātoki Tribal has a membership of 12 marae, with each having two representatives participating at the tribal forum. Current members are Te Rewarewa, Tauarau, Tāwhia, Ōtenuku, Waikirikiri, Te Tōtara, Te Pūtere, Te Papakāina, Ōwhakatoro, Ōhotu, Nāhina, and Hui te Raniora. Tūhoe values and culture guide the tribal in developing ideas and initiatives to uplift the people.

Ko Te Mana Motuhake o Tūhoe te whāina, ko te whakapiki i te ora o nā whānau kei te matua o nā whakaaro.
The Tribal has employees and an office, this is the working arm to carry out hapū aspirations. Te Taraipara ō Rūātoki Tribal is committed to achieving prosperity for its descendants in step with Tūhoe values and cultural practise.
In the early 1950’s the then Tūhoe leaders established the Western Tūhoe Tribal Executive Committee, it was also known as Te Kōpu then followed by Te Taraipara ō Rūātoki Tribal. The tribal authority has taken an active role in the care and development of whānau, hapū and marae. Active politically, the tribal consistently promotes Te Mana Motuhake o Tūhoe.
