A WOMAN and four children, aged from four to nine, remain missing in Te Urewera after going for a walk on Tuesday afternoon.

The group was dropped off just after 1pm on Tuesday for a one to two hour walk.

Police were alerted just before 4pm on Wednesday when they hadn’t returned.

Search and rescue teams were deployed in Te Urewera yesterday afternoon to look for the group.

With the support of a helicopter, the teams have been searching in the Otamatuna Ridge area overnight with the search continuing today.

A police spokeswoman said police would hold a press conference in Whakatane later today if the women and children could not be located.
