A better home will lead to a better future.

Those are the thoughts around Te Wharehou o Tūhoe opened this weekend.

According to Tamati Kruger, “This building is a symbol of that saying, 'If Tūhoe is united, it can achieve anything."

Within it's confines are art spaces, a teria, and even its own archive and the cultural hub is the first of its kind for Tūhoe.

Unemployment and poverty is seen throughout the tribal region of Tūhoe in places such as Taneatua, but services provided by the Wharehou could see real benefits pumped into the community.  It was also built with the environment in mind.

The final cost of the building is estimated to be around $15 million, an amount critics say is a waste of money. Howeve Tamati Kruger is sticking to his guns.

“Tūhoe most certainly didn't squander all the money on this one complex.  If you looked at similar buildings, how much did they cost?”

Although they've ticked off one goal by opening the doors of the new building, there's still a lot to be done if Tūhoe want to succeed.
