Northern Territory (NT) of Australia
In July Tahae Doherty, Cliff Akuhata and Te Hau Tutua traveled to the Northern Territory (NT) of Australia on behalf of Te Kotahi ā Tūhoe as part of joint Iwi, Landcare NZ effort to carry out exploratory research on “co-managed” National Parks in the Northern Territory.
The group traveled by various means around the NT, which included boat, plane and safari truck to get to very remote sites where these Parks are located. The Parks traveled to include; Uluru – Kata Tjuta (Ayers rock), Kakadu National Park and Nitmiluk National Park.
The focus for Tūhoe was:
- Assisting Te Kotahi ā Tūhoe with the collection of information and insights on park management
- Understanding what success the joint management arrangements have provided to Aborigines
- Understand how the NT Parks are being managed by the aborigines
