Tātau Katoa, Tātau Ka Toa - Prosperity Through Unity
For Tūhoe the driving motive within the Central North Island (CNI) has always been the belief that unity, common wealth and Iwi industry are primary igniters of whānau, hapū and Iwi prosperity. The CNI Treelord settlement was a very real, very practical example of these working parts acting in unison realising Iwi unity and guided by a spirit of generosity and kindred vision in united futures.
The astonishing effect of Iwi unity returned $195.7 million dollars of recently held Crown land. In addition, 8 CNI Iwi received rentals that have accumulated on the land since 1989, which were worth approximately $223 million, and includes an annual income stream of about $13 million.
The eight Iwi of the Settlement include; Tūwharetoa, Rangitihi, Ngāti Whare, Ngāti Manawa, Ngāti Whakaaue, Raukawa, Te Pūmautanga o Te Arawa and Tūhoe.
What Is The CNI?
CNI represents the midland region of the North Island and is technically defined by the CNI Waitangi Tribunal Inquiry district. The CNI is renowned for its collection of Crown forests totalling 176,000ha including Kaingaroa which has been variously described as a premiere world class forest of immense size and value.
The land under the Kaingaroa include the, Horohoro, Marotini, Waituhi, Pureora South, Waimihia, Taurewa and Whakarewarewa forests. Various Iwi, including Tūhoe claim mana whenua interest and association to Kaingaroa, and since 2007 have been working with 7 other Iwi to settle claims over all CNI forests. The CNI Iwi Collective signed the CNI Agreement in Principle (AIP) and soon after signed the CNI Deed of Settlement in June 2008.
