The Mataatua Regional Kapa Haka Competition for 2012 will be held in Omaio on the 24th (Pōhiri) & 25th of February.
We have 4 groups from Tūhoe who are competing this year. They are Ruatāhuna Kakahu Mauku, Te Karu, Te Whāiti Nui a Toi and Ngā Uri o Mahanga. We also have 1 group in the whakangahau section and they are the Korosins from Ruatāhuna. The performers of the Korosins are our kuia, koroua, pāpā and whāea.
Haka practice for our 4 Tūhoe Roopu began last year and our Korosins roopu in their 3rd week of practice.
Iharaira Temara is performing for the Korosins and is committed to getting to his practices every weekend. He was on a 10 day training exercise programme, although this ended on the 20th of January he is adamant to keep this up as fitness and health play a very important role in Kapa Haka.
Tūhoe Ki Kawerau otherwise known at Regional’s as Ngā Uri o Mahanga have not been frequent participants on the Mataatua Regional’s stage. They last performed in 2005 and are very excited and proud to be able to represent Tūhoe once again. None of this is possible without the teachings and insight of their kaiako, Reremoana and Herehuia Pītau.
Nā reira Tūhoe whānui, me kii te kōrero “Mahi Tahi, Haka Tahi”, Mauri Ora!
