Tuhoe homeland ‘not a precedent’

A NEW report has revealed Tuhoe’s desire for Te Urewera National Park to become a self-governing Tuhoe homeland is not the historic precedent Prime Minister John Key claims.
Chief Tuhoe negotiator Tamati Kruger said the Waitangi Tribunal report released last week refers to a recommendation made by Native Affairs Minister Donald McLean in 1871 to establish a self-governing Tuhoe homeland, as well as Premier Richard Seddon’s moves to advance that view in 1896.  Read more...
