Keys: Getting Ahead of Himself
The Crown Tuhoe Agreement in Principle (AIP) was such a done deal, that the Crown arrangements were already confirmed. The Crown had arranged commemorative pens to be engraved with the words “Tuhoe Crown Agreement in Principle 2010”. Up to 60 members of the Crown which included Treasury officials, Office of Treaty Settlements staff, Ministry of Justice officials, Crown Forestry Rental Trust representatives and a myriad of historians, including the Deputy Solicitor General had booked accommodation at Whakatane‟s Tuscany Villa.

One week on Keys and his unnamed senior Ministers still have no response to explain their broken promises to Tuhoe. Despite scorning negotiations through the media, Key continues to release details through TV reports that continue to anger the 35,000-strong tribe.

Ngai Tuhoe Disappointed at Loss of Nerve
“The Government’s decision not to proceed with an offer of settlement for our historical claims against the Crown is extremely disappointing. It reflects a failure of nerve and a loss of resolve to settle serious and longstanding grievances by a fair and just offer. “We understand Cabinet was supposed to consider an offer to us today but that the Prime Minister pulled the proposal at the eleventh hour.

Launching of "Encircled Lands", 17 December 2009

Today Tūhoe representatives will attend the launching of
“Encircled Lands” by emirate author Judith Binney. The book to be launched at the Beehive with the Minister of Treaty Negotiations affirms the plight of Tūhoe Iwi who are currently negotiating its comprehensive Treaty of Waitangi Raupatu Claims with the Crown. For Tūhoe, launching this publication coincides with the delicate negotiations between them and the Crown. In Tūhoe’s view, it does support the Tūhoe position and stance. Today Tūhoe Iwi shares the grief of Judith's whānau and conveys their best wishes to Judith for a speedy recovery from her hospital bed. For Tūhoe, Encircled Lands.
