Te Kotahi ā Tūhoe

TKAT was established 6 November 2005 following a Tūhoe hui a Iwi at Waiohau Marae. The hui was promoted and facilitated by the Tūhoe Waikaremoana Māori Trust Board and Ngā Rauru o Ngā Pōtiki.

Prior to the hui both the TWMTB and Ngā Rauru o Ngā Pōtiki had mandates to umbrella Tūhoe Treaty Claims on behalf of Tūhoe and Tūhoe Hapū with the Crown. Both the TWMTB and Ngā Rauru researched and presented Tūhoe Claims to the Waitangi Tribunal over the period 2003 – 2005. As a consequence of the Crown’s Treaty process, in particular its policy to ensure Tūhoe Iwi was recognized as a “Large Natural Group” now meant the Tūhoe Waikaremoana Trust Board and Ngā Rauru o Ngā Pōtiki had to make way for a new Tūhoe entity to take its Treaty Claims to the next stage.  That stage being Negotiations for Settlement, hence Tūhoe established Te Kotahi ā Tūhoe Trust at Waiohau.
